President Murmu and Macron took a ride on the Republic Day, the story of the buggy for which India and Pakistan tossed each other

Our country definitely got independence in the year 1947 but at the same time it got such a sting in the form of partition, a wound which will continue to give pain throughout the life. Pakistan, a separate country, divided our country India into two parts. Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s stubbornness took the lives of lakhs of people and crores of people became homeless. A line was drawn between the two countries. Don’t know how many things were distributed. One of these was an open air buggy of the colonial period which was to come in the share of either India or Pakistan. You will say why is this buggy suddenly being discussed? In fact, today i.e. on Friday, on Republic Day, the country’s President Draupadi Murmu and French President Emmanuel Macron, who came as chief guests, were traveling in the same buggy. This buggy has made a comeback after 40 years. It replaced the traditional armored limousine today. So let us know the interesting story of this buggy.

History of Buggy
President Draupadi Murmu and French President Emmanuel Macron were riding on Republic Day in a carriage that once belonged to the Viceroy of India during the British rule. Pulled by six horses, this black carriage with gold rims, red velvet interior and Ashoka Chakra was the pride of the Viceroy. It was used for ceremonial functions and for moving around Rashtrapati Bhavan (then the residence of the Viceroy). After the end of British rule, both India and newly formed Pakistan were keen to adopt this luxurious buggy. Both the countries came up with a unique method to decide which country would get this buggy.

Toss like cricket
The solution was found in the form of a toss to decide which government would become the pride of this black royal buggy. Colonel Thakur Govind Singh of India and Sahibzada Yakub Khan of Pakistan let fate decide by tossing a coin. But destiny had something else in store. The toss had decided the fate of the baggie. Luck was with India and this buggy came to India’s share. Colonel Singh won the baggy for India. Subsequently, the buggy was used by the President to travel from Rashtrapati Bhavan to Parliament for the swearing-in ceremony. This buggy was also used to carry the Head of State to the Beating Retreat ceremony held at Vijay Chowk at the conclusion of the Republic Day celebrations.

Buggy that had disappeared after seeing the dangers returned again
Several years after independence, the use of open carriages for the President declined. Due to security risks, it was decided not to run it much. This traditional buggy was replaced by bulletproof vehicles. But after 40 years it was brought back today on the occasion of Republic Day. President Draupadi Murmu and Chief Guest French President Emmanuel Macron had arrived together in this buggy. PM Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and all three chiefs of the Indian Army were present to receive him on the path of duty.
