Fatima Bibi, the first woman judge of the Supreme Court, received the Padma Bhushan award posthumously

The first woman judge of the Supreme Court and former Governor of Tamil Nadu, Fatima Beevi, who was a role model for women, has been posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan. In November 2023, Fatim Biwi breathed her last at the age of 96. His name is recorded in golden letters not only in the judiciary but also in the history of the country.

Who was Fatima Bibi?
Fathima Beevi was born in April 1927 in Pandalam, Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. He completed his schooling from Catholic High School and joined the University College, Thiruvananthapuram, earning a B.Sc. degree. After this, he completed his law studies from the Law Degree College here and registered as a lawyer in 1950.

After this, in 1958, due to her hard work, Fathima Beevi was appointed to the post of Munsip in Kerala Subordinate Judicial Service. In the year 1968, he was made a subordinate judge. Four years later, she became the Chief Judicial Magistrate in 1972. In 1974, he was appointed as District Judge. In 1980, he was appointed as a judicial member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. After this, in 1983, Biwi was promoted to the Kerala High Court. The very next year he was made a permanent judge.

First female judge of Supreme Court in 1989
After a long work in the field of justice, Fatima Beevi became the first woman judge of the Supreme Court in 1989. She retired in 1992. But after retirement, he was made a member of the National Human Rights Commission.

Became Governor of Tamil Nadu in 1997
In 1997, she became the Governor of Tamil Nadu. While holding this post, he also left his mark on the political field. During his tenure as Governor, he also served as Chancellor of the University of Tamil Nadu.

The title of first female judge goes to Fatima Bibi
Fatim Beevi was also the first Muslim woman judge to be appointed to the High Court. Along with this, the title of the first female judge of the Supreme Court of a country in Asia is also in her name.
