According to the Hindi calendar, this festival is celebrated on the fifth day of Magh Shukla Paksha, hence it is also known as Vasant Panchami.
This day is also celebrated as the Vidyarambh Sanskar of children, in which children begin their education process. It is an important tradition which makes children understand the importance of education and gives them a sense of sacrifice at the beginning of their studies.
In Vidyarambh Sanskar, small children worship Vidya Mata and seek blessings for her grace. After this, they are taught to read and write alphabets for the first time, which develops their intelligence and motivates them to move forward on the path of education.
Under this tradition, the children’s family and society members also encourage their enthusiasm and provide support in their studies. This wonderful festival of Vidyarambh Sanskar perpetuates the importance of education in the lives of children and leads them towards prosperity and success through good education.
This festival is also traditionally celebrated by farmers. On this day farmers worship their plough. By worshiping the plough, farmers receive the message that their hard work and farming are their connection with Mother Earth, which is extremely fundamental and important.
Farmers clean their plows on this day and decorate them with incense, lamps and flowers. The purpose of their prayer is that Mother Earth should lead them on the path of prosperity and success and bless them with good crops.
For farmers, this festival honors their hard work in farming and gives them self-confidence that their hard work and struggle always leads to success. On this day, along with worshiping their plough, farmers express their gratitude to Mother Earth and pray for her blessings. Thus, through this festival farmers play an important role in the society and they are provided with enthusiasm and inspiration.
