CAA implemented in the country; Notification issued; Non-Muslim Pak, Bangladeshi and Afghani refugees will get citizenship
The Central Government has issued the notification of Citizenship Amendment Act i.e. CAA. With this, this law has come into force across the country. CAA is called Citizenship Amendment Act in Hindi. This has cleared the way for non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to get citizenship.
3 big things about Citizenship Amendment Act…
- Who will get citizenship: People from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who came to India after being persecuted on religious grounds from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh before December 31, 2014, will be given citizenship. Only people from these three countries will be able to apply for citizenship.
- What is the impact on Indian citizens: CAA has nothing to do with Indian citizens. Indians have the right to citizenship under the Constitution. CAA or any law cannot take it away.
- How to apply: Application has to be made online. The applicant will have to tell when he came to India. You will be able to apply even if you do not have a passport or other travel documents. Under this, the period of stay in India has been kept more than 5 years. For the rest of the foreigners (Muslims) this period is more than 11 years.
There were speculations that PM Modi would announce the notification of CAA, but it did not happen. Before the notification, PM congratulated DRDO scientists on the successful test of Agni-5 missile on social media.
Government’s preparation regarding CAA
CAA’s online portal has been ready for registration. The Union Home Ministry has also done its dry run. Sources said the CAA will help those refugees from these neighboring countries who do not have documents. The ministry has received the highest number of applications for long-term visas from Pakistan.
Home Minister Amit Shah had said twice in two months that CAA would be implemented before the Lok Sabha elections. This is the law of the country. No one can stop it. Parliament had approved CAA on 11 December 2019. However, the government has extended the deadline for making rules and regulations to implement this law 8 times.
