The royal family had dominance over this seat from the beginning. The first woman MP to reach the Lok Sabha of the country from this seat was also from the royal family. Even after the formation of the state, the first woman MP also belonged to this family. Not only this, the sunrise of BJP’s victory on this seat in the year 1991 also happened due to the royal family.

Kamalendumati Shah won the general elections of 1952

For the first time in the general elections held in the year 1952, the queen mother of the royal family, Kamalendumati Shah had won the Tehri parliamentary seat as an independent candidate. He had defeated Congress candidate Krishna Singh. Uttarakhand became a separate state in the year 2000, after which Manvendra Shah was victorious in the first Lok Sabha elections in 2004. After the death of Manvendra Shah in 2007, BJP placed its bet on his son Manujendra Shah in the by-election on Tehri parliamentary seat, but he lost to Vijay Bahuguna of Congress.

In the public elections of 2009, Congress again fielded Vijay Bahuguna and BJP fielded shooter Jaspal Rana, but this experiment also failed and Vijay Bahuguna once again won, but in the year 2012, when the Congress government was formed, Vijay Bahuguna had to vacate the seat because he got the post of Chief Minister. By-election was held once again in the year 2012 on Tehri Lok Sabha seat. This time, Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah from the royal family was in the field.

In this by-election, Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah defeated Saket Bahuguna, son of Vijay Bahuguna. In this way, Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah also got the credit of being the first woman MP after the formation of the state. After this, Mala State Lakshmi Shah again became MP in 2014. Meanwhile, in the 2019 elections, Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah defeated Congress candidate Pritam Singh. After which she again became an MP.
