Threat to Netanyahu’s war cabinet amid war with Hamas, Benny Gantz threatens to exit the government

Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s three-member war cabinet, has threatened to resign from the government if it does not adopt a new plan for the war in Gaza. He said that if a new plan on war was not adopted, he would resign from the post on June 8. His announcement on Saturday signals a split in the leadership of Israel, which has been waging a more than seven-month war in Gaza over its stated goals of eliminating Hamas and freeing scores of hostages kidnapped in the October 7 attack. Remains to be completed.

At a news conference on Saturday, Gantz called on the Cabinet to agree on a six-point plan that lays out a vision for governing the besieged region after the conflict ends. Gantz’s plan calls for releasing Israeli detainees in Gaza, demilitarizing the territory and creating an international coalition with “American, European, Arab and Palestinian elements” to oversee its civilian affairs.

Threat to exit the government
The Israeli politician and former defense minister said he would oust his centrist party from the emergency unity government formed to oversee the war on Gaza if his demands are not met. Echoing Netanyahu’s position, Gantz said that neither Hamas nor Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas could rule Gaza after the war.

Body of another hostage found in Gaza
The Israeli military has said that the body of another Israeli hostage has been recovered from the Gaza Strip. This is the fourth dead body within 24 hours. “The body of Ron Benjamin was recovered in a joint special operation between the army and the Shin Bet security agency,” army spokesman Avichai Edrai posted on the social media platform X on Saturday. In a statement, Adrai said military information indicated that Ron Benjamin was killed during a Hamas attack on October 7 last year and that his body was taken by Hamas militants to Gaza. Israel estimates there are at least 129 Israeli hostages still held in Gaza, some of whom, according to Hamas, are dead.
