Feeding pigeons may be banned in Delhi
Now, feeding pigeons can be banned in the capital Delhi. In fact, in view of the health hazard due to the high population of birds, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi can ban the places where pigeons are fed. For this, the MCD is considering bringing a proposal. If the proposal is approved, feeding pigeons on Delhi’s footpaths, roundabouts and roadside intersections etc. can be stopped.
What is the purpose of this proposal?
According to the information received in the report, officials said that the purpose of the proposal is to solve the health risks associated with pigeon droppings. Actually, pigeon droppings can contain germs like salmonella, E. coli and influenza. These germs promote respiratory diseases like asthma. Apart from this, it can cause severe allergies.
What did the MCD officials say?
According to the MCD officials, this proposal will have to survey the places where the feed is fed. Apart from this, a consultation is to be issued to ban feeding. They said that feeding is common in many areas including Chandni Chowk, Kashmiri Gate, Jama Masjid and India Gate. MD officials said that we are not against the presence of pigeons but the problem arises when they gather in large numbers and their droppings get deposited in specific areas. They said that this poses a health risk to children, the elderly and respiratory patients.
What did the doctors say?
According to the information received in the report, Dr. Ushast Dhir, Director and Head of Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery Department at Sir Ram Ganga Hospital, said that when pigeons gather in large numbers, their droppings and flapping of wings increases the risk of spreading various pathogens, especially fungal spores like cryptococci. Inhaling these spores can cause serious respiratory problems. These include hypersensitivity pneumonitis, asthma and even severe fungal pneumonia in individuals with conditions like diabetes.
