Central government sent notice to Wikipedia, Elon Musk also made allegations
The central government has issued a notice to Wikipedia on Tuesday. This notice has been issued on several complaints received about misinformation on the platform. According to information received from sources, in a letter written to the Internet Encyclopedia, the government has emphasized that a small group of editors has essential control over the content, which can potentially affect its naturalness.
Government raised question
According to information in a media report received from sources, the government has raised the question that why should Wikipedia not be classified as a publisher instead of a mediator? However, no official statement has come from either the government or Wikipedia on this matter yet. Wikipedia is known as a free online encyclopedia. It allows volunteers to create and edit pages on various topics including issues and all areas of knowledge.
Claim of misinformation and derogatory material
Let us tell you that recently the Delhi High Court had reprimanded Wikipedia. The government’s action comes nearly two months after it warned of a possible ban in India during a case filed by news agency ANI. It has been claimed that the Wikipedia page contains false information and offensive material.
In the hearing held on November 1, the court questioned Wikipedia’s claim of being a free encyclopedia and emphasized that as an intermediary rather than a publisher, Wikipedia should provide necessary information when requested. In fact, Wikipedia has been facing criticism for alleged bias and misinformation, especially during the US presidential elections.
Elon Musk made allegations
X owner Elon Musk also publicly accused Wikipedia of supporting leftist ideologies. Musk had appealed to people not to donate to Wikipedia. He claims that this platform is controlled by leftist activists.
