Uttarakhand Road Safety Policy gets approval, 10 new ARTO posts created in hill districts

In view of the ever-increasing road accidents in Uttarakhand, steps have been taken from time to time by the state government. But till now, the responsibility of any department could not be fixed in case of any major road accident. In such a situation, the Transport Department has prepared the Road Safety Rules 2025 to fix the responsibility of the departments. Which was approved during the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday. After thorough brainstorming on all the points in the Road Safety Rules, the responsibilities of the departments have been fixed.

All the necessary standards and topics related to road safety have been included in the Road Safety Policy. But how the responsibility of the departments will be fixed especially during a road accident, those points have been included in the policy. After the introduction of this policy, now the departments will not be able to shirk any road accident. Especially what will be the role of the Public Works Department, Transport Department, Police Department and Health Department in road safety and which department will be responsible in case of a road accident and the reason for the accident is clear. This has also been clarified in the policy.

Efforts are being made at all levels by the state government to prevent road accidents in Uttarakhand. But due to lack of officers and employees in the mountainous areas, enforcement action is not being done properly. In view of which 10 more posts of Assistant Divisional Transport Officer have been created in the Transport Services Cadre in the structural framework of the Transport Department.

In fact, during the Dhami cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, approval was given to increase 10 posts of ARTO. At present, a total of 32 posts of Assistant Divisional Transport Officer have been created in the Transport Services Cadre. In such a situation, now there will be a total of 42 posts of Assistant Divisional Transport Officers.

According to the Transport Department, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts of Uttarakhand are very important for Chardham Yatra. Whereas Pithoragarh, Ranikhet and Ramnagar are important for tourism. Apart from this, Champawat district is a border district. Due to the geographical conditions of the state and the vast expansion of these districts, it is not possible for a single officer to handle the enforcement work and the work related to curbing vehicle accidents in the entire district along with the office. In view of this, one post of Assistant Divisional Transport Officer (Enforcement) has been created in the offices of 10 hill districts of the state.
