Why do earthquakes occur?

According to seismologists, the surface of our earth is mainly made up of seven large and many small tectonic plates. These plates keep moving continuously and often collide with each other. As a result of this collision, the corners of the plates can bend and due to excessive pressure they can also break. In such a situation, the energy coming out from below finds a way to spread outwards and when this energy comes out from inside the ground, an earthquake occurs.

What to do in case of an earthquake?

  • Keep your composure
  • If you are on the first or second floor of a high-rise building, immediately come out and come to an open space

Inside the building

  • If you are in a room inside closed doors, stand against a wall somewhere in the middle of the building
  • Sit under a table or desk
  • Stay away from windows and doors that open out
  • Stay away from large items such as cabinets, cupboards and refrigerators etc.

While leaving the building

  • Look for broken objects while going out
  • Beware of broken glass or broken electrical wires

Special precautions

  • If the ceiling starts falling on you or the building around you starts collapsing, cover your mouth and nose with a cloth, scarf or handkerchief
  • If you are on a road during an earthquake, try to come to an open space and stay away from buildings, bridges and electric poles
  • If you are in a moving vehicle, reduce your speed and stop the vehicle on the side of the road where the vehicle can be parked
