Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed in Parliament on Wednesday (March 26) that several important steps have been taken to improve crowd management at railway stations. These include wide foot-over-bridges, CCTV surveillance and war room arrangements.

To control heavy crowds during festivals and fairs, the Railways has implemented a limited entry control system. Under this system, holding areas have been created outside the stations, where passengers are not allowed entry until the train arrives on the platform.

Railways will create permanent holding areas at 60 stations

According to the Railway Minister, holding areas were created in Surat, Udhna, Patna and New Delhi during the 2024 festive season. This system was also implemented at nine stations in Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbh. Based on these experiences, permanent waiting areas will be created at 60 stations across the country.

Now only those with confirmed tickets will be allowed entry at 60 stations

Now complete entry control will be implemented at 60 stations. Only passengers with confirmed reserved tickets will get entry to the platform, while waiting list and ticketless passengers will have to stay in the outer waiting area. Unauthorized entry gates will also be sealed.

More CCTV cameras at stations to increase security

The Railway Minister said that new design 12 meter and 6 meter wide FOBs will be built which will be helpful in crowd management. Also, the number of CCTV cameras will be increased for surveillance at all major stations.

War rooms will be built at big stations for crowd management

War rooms will be set up at big railway stations where officers of all departments will work in coordination in case of crowd. Walkie-talkies, announcement systems and digital communication equipment will be installed at all heavily crowded stations.

Railway employees will get new uniforms and ID cards

New uniforms and ID cards will be issued to railway employees so that only authorized persons can enter the stations. Station directors will be appointed at major stations who will be given financial powers so that they can take immediate decisions.

Station Director has the right to control ticket sales

The station director will be given the right to control the sale of tickets according to the capacity of the station and the available trains. GRP, local police and civil administration will also be involved to ensure security at the stations.

Platform tickets will be available only under special circumstances

Taking lessons from the recent stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, railway zonal officers have been given the right to control the sale of platform tickets. However, platform tickets will be issued under certain special circumstances to help elderly, illiterate and female passengers.
