‘All MPs should be present in Parliament on 2nd April’, BJP issued whip regarding Wakf Bill; Congress called opposition meeting

The Waqf Bill, which has been amended after the report of a joint committee of Parliament, will be brought in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (2 April 2025) for consideration and passage. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a whip to all its Lok Sabha MPs asking them to be present in Parliament on 2 April 2025.
Congress calls opposition meeting
Congress has called a meeting of opposition parties today i.e. on Tuesday 1 April 2025 regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill. According to sources, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi may discuss the Waqf Bill. Muslims in Kerala have described many Christian properties as their Waqf property. Meanwhile, Catholic organizations have issued a press release supporting the government’s Waqf Bill. Along with this, there has been a demand for change in the rules on property ownership etc.
Muslims are being misled – BJP
According to sources, in view of this, the Congress has not yet decided whether Priyanka Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi will speak on the Waqf discussion in the Lok Sabha tomorrow. Meanwhile, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said that the Muslim community is being mislead regarding the bill. He said, “Like during the CAA, Muslims were instigated to create Shaheen Bagh. This bill will benefit Muslims, those who occupied the land will lose their possession.”
If suppressed by numbers, we will go to court – Congress
Congress MP Imran Masood targeted the central government as well as its allies regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill. He said, “Nitish Kumar, Chandrababu Naidu, Chirag Paswan, Jayant Chaudhary should understand that if the bill is passed, Muslims will never forgive them. Love does not happen with a kit worth six hundred rupees, return our Waqf. If we are suppressed by numbers, we will go to court.”
Voting will take place after eight hours of discussion
The Waqf Amendment Bill was discussed in the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. While introducing the bill last year, the government had proposed to send it to a joint committee of both the houses. In the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee, the opposition demanded 12 hours to discuss the bill, while the government said that a statutory resolution condemning the imposition of President’s rule in Manipur would be discussed and hence not more than eight hours could be allotted for the Wakf Bill.
