Registration of more than 55 lakh vehicles cancelled in Delhi; If seen on the roads, heavy fine will be imposed, know the new rules?

a
With the aim of controlling pollution in the national capital and modernizing the traffic system, the Delhi government has issued new strict guidelines for old vehicles. Under these guidelines, which will come into effect from 2024, the registration of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol or CNG vehicles older than 15 years has been canceled.
This decision has been taken keeping in mind reasons like environmental protection, reduction in vehicle jams, and road safety.
What is the definition of ‘End of Life’ vehicles?
- The order issued by the Transport Department states that:
- Diesel vehicles older than 10 years
- Petrol and CNG vehicles older than 15 years
Will no longer be able to run on the roads of Delhi nor can be parked in public places. The government has prepared a list of more than 55 lakh vehicles falling in this category and made it public on the official website of the Transport Department.
Complete ban on parking in public places
Parking these banned vehicles on:
- Roadside,
- Public parking,
- Even outside the house will now be considered completely illegal.
3 alternative options available to vehicle owners
The Delhi government has suggested the following three options to keep or dispose of these vehicles:
1. Keep safely in private parking
- If the vehicle owner wants to keep the vehicle then it should be parked only in his private premises (private parking).
- It should not be shared or public parking.
2. Shift to another state
- Vehicle owners can shift the vehicle outside the National Capital Region (NCR) within a year by taking a “No Objection Certificate (NOC)”.
3. Scrap the vehicle
- The vehicle can be scrapped through an authorized scrapping center.
- For this, use the “Voluntary Vehicle Scrapping Application (VVSA)” portal.
- Motor vehicle tax (road tax) will be waived on the purchase of a new vehicle after scrapping.
Penalties and action for keeping or driving illegal vehicles
If a vehicle owner violates the rules then:
- Such vehicle can be confiscated.
- The vehicle owner can be fined ₹5,000 to ₹10,000.
- Soon such old vehicles will not even get fuel from petrol pumps, making it impossible for them to run.
