Uttarakhand: Environmentalists reached Khalanga amidst heavy rains, warned against encroachment of forest

Environmentalists of Doon reached the spot despite heavy rain to protest against illegal felling and encroachment of hundreds of trees in the historic Khalanga forest of Dehradun. During this, they took a pledge to save the forest. Environmentalists praised social activist Deepshikha Rawat who first raised this issue.

Congress leader Pankaj Singh Chhetri said that the forest department has registered a case of cutting 22 trees, but seeing the situation on the spot, it seems that hundreds of trees have been cut. Local people and aware citizens raised their voice against encroachment in this centuries-old forest of Khalanga. Chhetri said that where was the forest department sleeping till now? How did encroachment happen on such an old forest? Chhetri said that we will not let the historical heritage of Khalanga be destroyed.

Forest department had said that a survey will be conducted
It is worth noting that the Forest Department had stopped the construction work yesterday after taking cognizance of the matter. It was confirmed that there was a Sal forest on the spot. Along with this, a crime of damaging 22 trees has also been registered. The Forest Department has also said that a survey will be conducted to clarify the boundary of the Khasra of the concerned land.
