Mount Shinmoedake, part of the Kirishima volcanic chain on Japan’s Kyushu Island, erupted on July 2, which was its most powerful eruption in the last few years. After the explosion, its ash spread far into the sky, covering parts of Miyazaki and Kagoshima provinces.

Japan issued alert

Meanwhile, the Japanese government warned of possible more powerful earthquakes southwest of its main islands on Saturday, but urged people not to believe predictions of a disaster. Earlier on Friday, some residents were evacuated from a remote island near the epicenter of a 5.5 magnitude earthquake at the tip of the southernmost main island of Kyushu. A strong earthquake struck here on Thursday, which was so powerful that it was difficult for people to stand.
