US President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of 10 F-35 stealth fighter jets at an airfield in Puerto Rico. This deployment is being done amid rising tensions with Venezuela. Two Venezuelan F-16 fighter jets flew over a US Navy destroyer in the Caribbean on Thursday, after which the US has strongly warned Venezuela against interfering with US military operations in the Caribbean. This incident took place after a US missile attack on a Venezuelan boat, in which 11 people were killed. US President Donald Trump had claimed that the boat was carrying illegal drugs.

Trump gave the order to shoot down!

The report said that Trump has ordered that if US warships are threatened by Venezuela’s F-16 fighter jets, then they should be shot down. The US Defense Department has said that the purpose of deploying F-35 fighter jets is to conduct a campaign against drug-terrorist groups believed to be active in the southern Caribbean. This may be the first time a country has deployed stealth fighter jets for anti-drug operations. The US usually relies on drones and Coast Guard equipment to stop illegal drug trafficking in the region.

US threatens Venezuela

The Pentagon said in a statement, “Today, two military aircraft of the Maduro government flew near a US Navy ship in international waters.” The US statement described it as a “highly provocative move”. It said, “The cartels running Venezuela are strongly advised not to make any further attempts to impede, disrupt or interfere with anti-narcotics and counter-terrorism operations conducted by US forces.”

It is believed that the presence of the F-35 could further escalate tensions between the two sides. There is also a fear that this could lead to a confrontation between the US F-35 and Venezuela’s F-16. For years, the Trump administration has claimed that the drug overdose problem in the US is fueled by cocaine shipments from Venezuela. Last month, Trump accused Venezuelan drug cartels of smuggling drugs into the US. He described Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as “one of the biggest drug traffickers in the world, the head of the Cartel of the Sons and a threat to American national security.”
