A ceasefire agreement has been reached between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. However, Hamas is not complying with Trump’s condition that Hamas surrender its weapons. Instead, Hamas has categorically stated that it will not surrender its weapons.
Hamas wants to maintain security control in Gaza
A senior Hamas official told Reuters that Hamas wants to maintain security control in Gaza during the interim period, but he also said that Hamas is not committed to disarmament, a position that highlights the difficulties facing US plans to end the war.
Hamas is ready for a five-year ceasefire
Hamas Politburo member Mohammad Nazzal also said that the group is ready for a five-year ceasefire to rebuild devastated Gaza, and what happens after that will depend on guarantees that Palestinians are given hope for statehood.
In an interview with Reuters from Doha, where Hamas politicians have long resided, Nazzal defended Hamas’s actions in Gaza. Hamas publicly condemned the executions on Monday. He said “extraordinary measures” are always taken during war and that those executed are guilty of murder.
Hamas spokesman speaks out about Hamas’s killings
Hamas has widely expressed these views before, but the timing of Nazzal’s comments highlights major obstacles to efforts to fully end the war in Gaza, coming just days after the first phase of a ceasefire was agreed upon.
Hamas’s stance points to major differences between US President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza and the talks expected to focus on Hamas’s weapons and Gaza’s governance.
Israel said this
Reacting to Nazzal’s remarks, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said that Israel is committed to the ceasefire agreement and will uphold and fulfill its part of the plan.
In a statement to Reuters, Israel said that Hamas was supposed to release all hostages in the first phase, but it has not done so. Hamas knows where the bodies of our hostages are. Under this agreement, Hamas is supposed to disarm. There is no doubt about that. They have not done so. Hamas must adhere to the 20-point plan. They are running out of time.
