The US could order an attack on Venezuela at any time. There is speculation that Donald Trump, who has placed a multimillion-dollar bounty on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, is attempting to overthrow his government. According to an Al Jazeera report, the United States will expand its military presence in Latin America by sending an aircraft carrier strike group. A US military spokesman said on Friday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the deployment of the USS Gerald Ford and its accompanying strike group of five destroyers to Latin America.

Meanwhile, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a social media post that “the increased US military presence in the USSOUTHCOM AOR will strengthen the US ability to detect, monitor, and interdict illicit elements and activities that threaten the security and prosperity of the American homeland and our security in the Western Hemisphere.”

The US could attack Venezuela
However, Donald Trump has so far stated that he is taking action against Venezuelan drug traffickers. But judging by US preparations, this appears unlikely. The deployment of an aircraft carrier and strike group goes far beyond cracking down on drug traffickers. It comes at a time when the US is taking a tough stance against Venezuela, a longtime focus of US resentment. Venezuela has stated that it has more than 5,000 anti-aircraft missiles ready to shoot down US warplanes in various parts of the country.

According to Al Jazeera, eight US warships with approximately 6,000 sailors and Marines are already deployed in the region, and now the USS Gerald Ford and its strike group, which will include five destroyers and an additional 4,500 personnel, are being sent. The aircraft carrier is currently in the Mediterranean Sea, and it is unclear when it will arrive in Latin America. Donald Trump stated last week that he had authorized the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the US international intelligence agency, to conduct operations in Venezuela, and hinted that attacks on Venezuelan soil could soon occur.

America’s Double Standards
This is the same America that lectures other countries on human rights and democracy, yet now it can attack another country again. The US has done this in countries like Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The US has illegally overthrown governments in dozens of countries, and Donald Trump’s claims about Venezuela are also baseless. The Trump administration has claimed that President Nicolas Maduro’s government is colluding with criminal groups to “invade” the US through drugs and immigration. The reality is that Venezuela’s role in the global drug trade is negligible, and the US’s own internal intelligence assessments have found little evidence to support the claim that the Maduro government controls criminal groups.

Since September, the US has been continuously carrying out missile attacks on vessels coming from Venezuela. The Trump administration claims that these vessels are smuggling drugs. However, the Trump administration has not yet provided any evidence of drug trafficking. Dozens of people have been killed in these attacks, which have been criticized by both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. United Nations officials have also called these attacks a violation of international law and described the deaths of those killed as “murder.” Meanwhile, the Maduro government has stated that it will strongly respond to any attempt by the US to overthrow the government.

Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Vladimir Padrino said on Friday, “Interpret it however you want, but the armed forces will not allow a government here that is subservient to the interests of the United States.” He further said, “This is the greatest military threat in the last 100 years. We want peace, not war.” Donald Trump has so far rejected calls to de-escalate tensions.
