Maharashtra: The formula for the BMC elections has been finalized in the ‘new MVA’! Uddhav Thackeray has offered this many seats to Raj Thackeray, but a complication has arisen even before the alliance is formed

Political activity has intensified in Mumbai over seat-sharing for the BMC elections. A formal announcement of the proposed alliance between MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray is expected on December 24th. The two leaders will hold a joint press conference to present their shared strategy for the BMC elections.
Following this news, discussions about seat-sharing in Marathi and non-Marathi dominated areas of Mumbai have created a stir in political circles. The December 24th announcement is considered a crucial step that will determine the direction of the BMC elections.
What is the opinion on seat sharing?
A consensus has almost been reached between Shiv Sena UBT and MNS on the BMC seat-sharing formula, but discussions are still ongoing for some non-Marathi dominated areas. The final decision on how many seats each party will get in areas like Ghatkopar, Kandivali, Borivali, and Mulund is yet to be made.
Under the proposed formula, it has been agreed that UBT Sena will get 145 to 150 seats, MNS 65 to 70 seats, and NCP (SP) 10 to 12 seats. UBT Sena has left 12 to 15 existing seats for the MNS, most of whose former corporators have joined the Shinde Sena.
Strategy before the announcement
On one hand, an important meeting of the Mahayuti (BJP and Shiv Sena) is going to be held at the Chief Minister’s official residence, ‘Varsha’ bungalow. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, will be attended by senior leaders like BJP state president Ravindra Chavan, Ashish Shelar, and Uday Samant. It is believed that the final decision on Mumbai’s seats will be made tonight.
On the other hand, discussions regarding the alliance between Uddhav Thackeray (UBT) and Raj Thackeray (MNS) are continuing at ‘Matoshree’. Although a joint press conference by the two leaders was expected on December 23rd, sources say that Raj Thackeray believes that the announcement should not be rushed until a consensus is reached on all the seats. With the nomination process starting tomorrow, the alliance between MNS and UBT remains uncertain.
The Maharashtra State Election Commission has announced the election schedule for 29 municipal corporations. Voting will be held in a single phase on January 15, 2026, and the counting of votes will take place on January 16, 2026. Therefore, the announcement on December 24 is being considered a turning point for the BMC elections.
