Former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is serving a life sentence in the Unnao rape case, has been granted bail by the Delhi High Court. A bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar suspended Sengar’s sentence until the completion of the hearing on his appeal. Sengar had appealed against his conviction.
The court ordered Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s conditional release on a personal bond of ₹15 lakh. Four conditions were also imposed:
- He must stay 5 km away from the victim.
- He must report to the police every Monday.
- He must surrender his passport to the relevant authorities to prevent him from leaving the country.
- Violation of any of these conditions will result in the cancellation of his bail.
Sengar and his associates had abducted and raped a 17-year-old girl in Unnao in 2017. The case was investigated by the CBI. On December 20, 2019, the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi sentenced the convicted Kuldeep Singh Sengar to life imprisonment, ordering him to remain in jail until his death. Sengar was also fined ₹25 lakh. Kuldeep Sengar’s membership in the legislative assembly was also revoked, and he was expelled from the BJP.
