Lofven re-elected Prime Minister of Sweden
Just a week after he resigned as Prime Minister of Sweden following a no-confidence motion in parliament (Riksdagen) in June, Stefan Löfven was reinstated. The leader of the Social Democrats, who led a caretaker government since his resignation, is back in the 349-seat Riksdagen with 116 support.
According to the Swedish constitution, 175 deputies did not vote against the proposed prime minister. A total of 173 votes were cast against Löfven, which enabled him to seek re-election.
Löfven will now form a new government with the Green Party, who have shared power with the Social Democrats for the past seven years.
Lofven has previously announced that he will resign again if he is reinstated and the proposed budget is rejected.
If that happens, Sweden’s voters will face the prospect of a mid-term election again, less than a year from the elections scheduled in September 2022.
