News of firing on Assam-Mizoram border, a few days after Amit Shah’s visit, tension between local people increased
Violence erupted on the Assam-Mizoram border today. These reports of violence came two days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s meeting with all the Chief Ministers of the North-Eastern states in Shillong. There have been reports of firing on the border area, along with reports of attacks on government vehicles have also come to the fore. The Chief Ministers of both the states have tagged the Union Home Minister by tweeting on this issue. Tweeting a video in which people can be seen armed with sticks, Mizoram CM Zoramthanga has sought Home Minister Shah’s intervention in the matter. He wrote – This should be stopped immediately.
Shri @AmitShah ji….kindly look into the matter.
This needs to be stopped right now.#MizoramAssamBorderTension @PMOIndia @HMOIndia @himantabiswa @dccachar @cacharpolice pic.twitter.com/A33kWxXkhG

In another tweet, he wrote, ‘While returning to Mizoram via Cachar, an innocent couple was attacked and vandalized by goons. After all, how will you justify such violent incidents.’ Assam CM Himanta Bisb Sarma tweeted, ‘Respected Zoramthangaji. The SP of Kolasib (Mizoram) has asked us to step down from our posts until their citizens listen and stop the violence. How can we run the government in such circumstances. I hope you will intervene as soon as possible. ‘
The three districts of Mizoram, Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit, share a 164.6 km long inter-state border with the Kochar, Hailakandi and Karimang districts of Assam. Clashes have erupted in the “disputed” area of the border over the years, with residents on both sides accusing each other of infiltration. The last such incident was reported in June when the security forces of both the states accused each other of infiltration. Apart from Mizoram, Assam also has border disputes with Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
