Madhya Pradesh : L Murugan will be declared elected unopposed today

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan may be declared elected unopposed as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in the Rajya Sabha by-election from Madhya Pradesh today. The time for withdrawal of nomination by the candidate is fixed till 3 pm in the by-election. Mr. Murugan is the only candidate for this by-election and after the stipulated time for withdrawal of nominations, Mr. Murugan will be declared elected unopposed.
Mr. Murugan had filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha by-election on September 21 before the Returning Officer and Principal Secretary of the Legislative Assembly, AP Singh, in the Assembly premises here. The last date for filing nomination papers was September 22 and scrutiny of nominations was done the next day. Originally from Tamil Nadu, Mr. Murugan has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and was recently inducted into the Union Cabinet. The BJP’s central leadership has decided to send Mr. Murugan, an advocate by profession, to Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh.
Senior BJP leader Thaawarchand Gehlot had resigned from the Rajya Sabha membership on July 07 and due to this one seat was vacant. A by-election was held to fill it. Shri Gehlot has been made the Governor of Karnataka. Mr. Gehlot’s tenure was till April 2, 2024. Therefore, the term of the winning candidate on the seat vacated due to his resignation will be till April 2, 2024. At present, out of ten Rajya Sabha MPs, 07 are from BJP and 03 from Congress.
