Maharashtra : Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh gets a big relief from Supreme Court, stay on arrest

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh has got a big relief from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the relief from arrest in the criminal cases registered against Parambir Singh. The Supreme Court said that the departments can continue to investigate the charges against him, but the police cannot file a charge sheet against Parambir Singh in any other case.
The Supreme Court has fixed January 11, 2022 for the next hearing of the matter. Along with this, the court has directed the CBI to file its affidavit on the petition filed by Parambir Singh. Parambir Singh is accused of running an extortion racket with sacked ASI Sachin Waje of Mumbai Police. The Crime Branch of Mumbai Police alleged that the duo along with two others were extorting money from hoteliers and bar owners in Maharashtra and Mumbai.
A few days back, the Maharashtra government suspended him after an FIR was registered against the 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. A case has also been registered against Singh and some other policemen on charges of recovery. Parambir Singh had written a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray accusing the then Home Minister Anil Deshmukh of asking police officers to extort Rs 100 crore from restaurants and bars in Mumbai. NCP leader Deshmukh denied his allegation.
Parambir Singh was declared a fugitive by the courts in Mumbai and Thane and appeared after nearly six months last month. After this he reached the Supreme Court where he got temporary relief from arrest. Earlier also, the Supreme Court had given relief from arrest on the ground of cooperating in the investigation.
