Uttarakhand : Marginal participation in BJP-Cong, neither youth nor women got participation

Claims of political parties like one family-one ticket, no chance for son after father, increasing participation of women, opportunity for youth in politics… The lists of candidates of both the parties have been released. BJP gave tickets to 7 and Congress to five women. The BJP, which is going to contest the elections under the leadership of the young Chief Minister, did not trust a single BJYM leader, while the Congress has given tickets to two youth Congress leaders. Both the political parties seem to be trapped in the fascination of familism.

This time the Bharatiya Janata Party has entered the election fray with the claim of a youth government under the leadership of young Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Barring Doiwala, candidates have been declared for 69 seats so far. Among these candidates, the central leadership did not trust the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. Not a single BJYM leader has been given a ticket by the BJP, while the Chief Minister of the state, Pushkar Singh Dhami, himself has gone ahead with the important responsibility of being the state president of Yuva Morcha.

The Congress, which started the preparations for the assembly elections with the claim of one family-one ticket, could not get away from it. The ticket was given to the daughter of the former CM Harish Rawat himself, under whose leadership the election is being contested. However, in the matter of youth, the Congress has expressed confidence in its Youth Congress organization. From the women’s point of view, the Congress has been able to repose confidence in five women this time, while after announcing the names of two women, they were dropped from the list.

BJP s 7womancandidate

  • Savita Kapoor from Dehradun Cantt
  • Khanpur to Kuvarani Devyani
  • Yamkeshwar to Renu Bisht
  • Chandra Pant to Pithoragarh
  • Someshwar to Rekha Arya
  • Sarita Arya from Nainital
  • Kotdwar to Ritu Khandudi

Congress has given tickets to Anupama Rawat, daughter of former CM Harish Rawat in Haridwar Rural, Godavari Thapli in Mussoorie, Mamta Rakesh from Bhagwanpur, Meena Sharma from Rudrapur and Anukreethy Gusain from Lansdowne. Whereas, after giving ticket to Barkha Rani in Jwalapur seat of Haridwar district and Sandhya Dalakoti on Lalkuan seat, the name was withdrawn. The Congress gave tickets to five women as against the 7 women candidates of the BJP. Talking about the trust on the youth, Congress has given two tickets to the youth. Among them, Jayendra Chand Ramola from Youth Congress quota was given ticket from Rishikesh seat and Ravi Bahadur from Jwalapur.

Congress gave tickets to women and youth

  • Anupama Rawat from Haridwar Rural
  • Mussoorie to Godavari Thapli
  • Mamta Rakesh in Bhagwanpur
  • Rudrapur to Meena Sharma
  • Anukriti Gusain from Lansdowne
  • Jayendra Chand Ramola (Youth Congress) from Rishikesh

In the matter of familism, the Congress was neither able to follow the principle of one family, one ticket nor could it get rid of familism. Vaibhav Walia and Abhinav Thapar were also seeking tickets from youth quota on Cantt seat, but their wishes could not be fulfilled. Former CM Harish Rawat will contest from Lalkuan while his daughter Anupama Rawat has been fielded from Haridwar Rural seat. Apart from this, Yashpal Arya will contest from Bajpur while his son Sanjeev Arya is in the fray from Nainital. The party has given ticket to Narendra Chand Singh, son of former MP KC Singh Baba, from Kashipur. Congress has given ticket to Anukreethy Gusain, daughter-in-law of former minister and senior leader Harak Singh Rawat, for Lansdowne assembly seat. Overall, even the Congress could not escape the shadow of familyism.
