Russia vetos Ukraine issue in UNSC, India condemns attack, but refrains from voting

During discussions on Friday at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) against the Russian attack on Ukraine, Russia vetoed a resolution that “strongly condemned” Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine. And the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops was demanded. However, this move was already being expected from Russia.
Eleven of the 15 UNSC members voted in favor of the resolution against Russia, which was co-authored by the United States and Albania, while China, India and the UAE abstained from voting. India has condemned the attack on Ukraine and insisted on finding a solution through dialogue.
The resolution against Russia failed because of Moscow’s veto power as a permanent member of the council. Nevertheless, the debate in the Security Council provided an important opportunity to condemn President Vladimir Putin’s decision to attack neighboring Ukraine.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said after the vote, “Let me make one thing clear. Russia, you can veto this resolution, but you can’t veto our voice. You can’t veto the truth.” You can’t veto our principles, you can’t veto the Ukrainian people.”
Before the vote, Thomas-Greenfield said that the Russian attack on Ukraine was “so audacious and so brazen that it posed a great threat to our international system as we know it.” Don’t see… we have an obligation to at least object to it.”
