Appeal in court to save Kerala woman facing death sentence in Yemen

An appeal has been filed in the Delhi High Court, seeking a direction for diplomatic intervention to save a Kerala woman facing death sentence for the murder of a Yemeni national in Yemen. . The application, filed by an organization, has urged the court to direct the Center to facilitate dialogue with the victim’s family and punish them by paying ‘blood money’ (compensation in the form of money to the deceased’s family) under Yemen law. Save the Indian citizen Nimisha Priya from the death penalty.

Nimisha Priya is an Indian nurse and in the year 2020 she was convicted for the murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi. Mahdi died in July 2017 from an overdose of sedatives. An overdose of the drug was allegedly given by Nimisha by injection so that she could obtain her passport. The passport was in Mahdi’s possession.

The petition alleged that Mahdi had used forged documents to show his marriage to the victim. He used to torture the victim as well as torture her.

The petitioner ‘Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council’ has challenged the decision given by the single bench on 15 March. Disposing of the petition, the single bench had asked the Ministry of External Affairs to explore the possibility of appealing against the sentence in a Yemeni court.
