4700 pilgrims leave for Amarnath cave from Jammu amid heavy rains
Amid heavy rains, a fresh batch of over 4,703 Amarnath Yatra pilgrims on Thursday left Bhagwati Nagar base camp here for the twin base camps of Baltal and Pahalgam in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. Officials said the pilgrims left in a convoy of 156 vehicles under the protection of the Central Reserve Security Force (CRPF). The 2,001 pilgrims leaving for Baltal were the first to leave the Bhagwati Nagar camp in 54 vehicles, followed by a second convoy of 102 vehicles carrying 2,702 pilgrims to Pahalgam. With this, a total of 1,24,714 pilgrims have left for the Valley from the Jammu base camp since June 29. Heavy rains have been lashing the Jammu region, raising the possibility of landslides, landslides and flash floods. The 43-day Amarnath Yatra to the 3,880-metre-high cave temple in the South Kashmir Himalayas began on June 30. Officials said over 2.20 lakh pilgrims have so far offered prayers at the cave temple, which houses the naturally formed Shivling. The yatra is scheduled to end on August 11, on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. So far 35 people have died during the Amarnath Yatra, mostly pilgrims. Officials said this does not include the 15 pilgrims who died in flash floods near the cave on July 8.
