Britain’s newly-minted Prime Minister Rishi Sunak extended Diwali greetings from his official residence at 10 Downing Street on Wednesday. Sunak, the first Prime Minister of Indian origin, also lit diyas at the Diwali reception. During this he vowed to create a Britain where “our children and grandchildren can light their lamps”.

Tweeting a picture from the Diwali celebrations, she said, “Great to be at tonight’s Diwali reception at number 10. I will do my best to create a Britain where our children and our grandchildren can light their lamps and look to the future with hope. Happy Diwali to all!”

The devout Hindu sage Sunak formally took over as Britain’s prime minister after meeting with King Charles III on Tuesday, a day after he was elected the new leader of the Conservative Party.

Sunak, the third prime minister in seven weeks, started the cabinet meeting by saying “economic stability and fiscal stability will be at heart”. Sunak tweeted: “This morning I told the cabinet of the big task we are facing, and I am confident this government can rise to the challenge and work for the whole of the UK.”
