High Court bans Trinamool leaders on bail
The Calcutta High Court stayed the bail granted to three Trinamool Congress leaders and a former close aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday night. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had earlier arrested the four leaders in the Narada Sting case earlier in the day. Later, the special CBI court also released the four leaders on bail.
Special court judge Anupam Mukherjee granted bail to ministers Subrata Mukherjee and Firhad Hakim, Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra and former mayor Shobhan Chatterjee after hearing the arguments of CBI and defense lawyers.
Now since the bail of the four leaders has been revoked, they will have to remain in CBI custody till May 19. The matter will be heard in the High Court on that day. Meanwhile, the CBI has filed a charge sheet against these four leaders, including IPS officer SMH Meeraj. Mr. Meeraj is currently out on bail.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress supremo and Chief Minister Ms. Banerjee demanded the CBI to arrest her as well and sat on a dharna outside the office of the investigating agency for about six hours. In the Narada sting operation case, the CBI arrested two of Ms. Banerjee’s senior cabinet colleagues, Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee, at the Nizam Palace in the city.
