Gujrat / Surat : Six people died after drinking contaminated water, dozens got infected
Six people died and over 50 were hospitalized after allegedly consuming contaminated drinking water in Kathor village of Surat city. The incident took place over two days on May 30 and 31 when health officials of Surat Municipal Corporation reached Vivek Nagar Colony and distributed chlorine medicine among villagers. The villagers were suffering from symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. Villagers infected with contaminated water are being treated in nearby government and private hospitals. According to preliminary investigation, villagers fell ill after consuming contaminated water. During inspection it was found that there is leakage in the drinking water pipeline and it has got mixed in the drainage water. Surat Mayor Voghawala took stock of the situation and announced Rs 1 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. Voghawala said water tankers would be provided till the water supply is restored in the colony. Water testing vans are also being sent to test the water from the pipeline to the homes of the villagers. Kathor village was recently included in the urban area of Surat.
