On Thursday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted the ‘flag-in’ ceremony for four successful mountaineering expeditions undertaken by the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi, at the Chief Minister’s Camp Office. These included the Mount Aconcagua expedition, conducted jointly with the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM & WS), Pahalgam. The Chief Minister congratulated all the mountaineers on their successful expeditions.
The Chief Minister remarked that the courage, discipline, technical proficiency, and team spirit demonstrated by the mountaineers amidst challenging high-altitude conditions serve as an inspiration for the youth. Such achievements not only motivate young people to engage in adventure activities but also strengthen Uttarakhand’s identity at both national and international levels.
Conquering the 6,961-meter peak of Aconcagua
The joint expedition by NIM and JIM & WS was led by Colonel Hem Chandra Singh. The six-member team successfully scaled Mount Aconcagua in Argentina—standing at a height of 6,961 meters—on February 22, 2026. This expedition had been flagged off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh from South Block in New Delhi.
Scaling three peaks in a single expedition
NIM’s ‘Nun-Kun Expedition-2026’ was led by the institute’s Principal, Colonel S.S. Rajpurohit. The team successfully summited Mount Kun (7,077 meters) on August 15. Subsequently, they successfully scaled Mount Delta-41 (5,908 meters) on August 26 and Mount Nun (7,135 meters) on August 31.
Thus, the team achieved the remarkable feat of conquering three peaks of the Nun-Kun mountain range during a single expedition. Immense Potential for Mountaineering and Adventure Tourism
The Chief Minister stated that Uttarakhand’s geographical conditions offer immense potential for mountaineering and adventure tourism. The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) is not only providing high-level training in mountaineering and adventure activities to the youth but is also fostering leadership, discipline, and the ability to cope with challenging situations.
Special Principal Secretary (Sports and Youth Welfare) Amit Kumar Sinha, NIM Principal Colonel S.S. Rajpurohit, JIM & WS Pahalgam Principal Colonel Hem Chandra Singh, and Captain G. Santosh Kumar, along with institute officials and members of various expeditions, were present on the occasion.
