23 Afghan commandos killed in clash with Taliban
At least 23 members of the Afghan Army’s Special Unit were killed in a fierce clash with the Taliban in Afghanistan’s northern province of Faryab. During the operation by commandos and local soldiers, clashes broke out in Daulat Aabad district, in which six policemen were also injured.
After heavy fighting, the security forces in Karamkol district have now withdrawn from the district, the official said.
Daulat Abad district was captured a week ago by the Taliban after heavy fighting.
Violence is at its peak in the country amid the stalled peace process.
Fighting between Afghan security forces and the Taliban was reported in at least 80 districts in one day.
According to sources, more than 100 Taliban fighters and 90 members of the security force were killed during this period.
Neither the Taliban nor the government gave the exact number of casualties.
Centers in at least 30 districts have fallen into Taliban hands since the start of the official withdrawal of US and other NATO troops on May 1.
