Federer, Barty and Zverev in second round

Former number one and 20 Grand Slam winner Roger Federer of Switzerland, world number one female player and top seed Ashleigh Barty of Australia and men’s fourth seed Alexander Zverev of Germany won their respective matches on Tuesday for the third Grand Slam of the year at Wimbledon. Made it to the second round of the Tennis Championships.

France’s Adrian Menerino, here against eight-time winner sixth seed Federer, decided to forfeit the match due to a knee injury after losing the first point in the fifth and deciding set. Federer was then tied 2-2 in the match 6-4, 6-7, 3-6, 6-2. He took the first point in the deciding set by hitting S but Menorino decided to leave the match after that. Federer won the match in two hours 44 minutes.

Top seed Barty defeated Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 in three sets in a match that lasted one hour and 44 minutes. Navarro, who reached the fourth round in 2019, is out in the first round for the first time since 2015. She struggled a bit in the second set itself and won it 7–1 in the tie-break but failed to surpass Barty in the deciding set.

In the men’s section, Zverev defeated Holland’s Chillifire Talon Garikaspur 6-3 6-4 6-1 in a one-sided fashion to reach the second round. Zverev had lost in the last two occasions here with a chiffier but this time he showed his stamina and entered the second round. Zverev hit 20s in the match and broke Garikaspur’s serve six times.

Meanwhile, five-time champion and former number one Venus Williams of the United States played as a wildcard for the 23rd time in the tournament after beating Romania’s Mihela Buzarnescu 7-5 4-6 6-3 to reach the second round.
