Stop the tension! Twitter appointed Grievance Officer in India
The ongoing tussle between the Government of India and microblogging site Twitter may now come to an end. After receiving a blunt reply from the Delhi High Court, Twitter India has finally appointed a Grievance Officer in India. According to the information available on the website of the microblogging platform, Vinay Prakash will now be the grievance officer of Twitter in India. The Delhi High Court, during the hearing of a case on July 8, had told Twitter that it cannot be given any legal protection if it does not implement India’s new IT rules.
For the past two months, the situation of confrontation between Twitter and the Government of India continues. Twitter was yet to implement India’s new IT rules, despite receiving repeated notices. Twitter is to issue a report related to the settlement of complaints of Indian users every month under Article 4(d) of India’s IT Rules 2021. Along with this, Twitter also has to specify the number of URLs that have been removed during monitoring of the social media platform for being found to be false or misleading. The High Court had sought affidavits from all the interim officers appointed by Twitter that they take responsibility for the task assigned to them. Earlier, during the hearing of the case, Twitter said that it needs 8 weeks to appoint a grievance officer in India. Earlier on Tuesday, the High Court had given Twitter only two days.
