Coast Guard rescue team saves 155 lives in Karnataka

The Indian Coast Guard carried out a one-day rescue operation in Karnataka, rescuing 155 people stranded in flood-hit North Kannada district. The rescue operation was part of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), consisting of seven to nine Coast Guard forces in each team and was deployed and deployed in the flood-affected areas of Kadra, Fingerijug Island and Kharegug Island in North Kannada.

A team rescued a total of 90 people from Khadgejug village, while the rescue team in collaboration with the state administration rescued 10 people from Bodozug Island, the statement said. The rescue operation was carried out by Disaster Response Teams (DRTs) using two rubberized swim boats, life jackets and lifebuoys.

The statement said that 23 personnel trapped in this morning operation were rescued and pressed into relief operations. Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC) said that this is the first time that the state has recorded more than 500 mm of rain.

The Ankola-Dongri section in Uttara Kannada received 541 mm of rain in 24 hours between July 22 and July 23. During the same period 42 TMC of water was poured into 13 major reservoirs of the state. According to KSNDMC officials, a total of 18 talukas in six districts have reported significant losses. A total of 8,733 persons living in low-lying and vulnerable areas have been shifted by the respective district administrations. A total of 4,964 people living in North Kannada (3,066), Shivamogga (8) and Belagavi (1,890) districts have taken shelter in 80 relief camps.
