Nivedita Karki from Uttarakhand won the gold medal by defeating world youth champion Geetika in the 4th Youth Men’s and Women’s National Boxing Championship held at Delhi Public School (DPS), Sonepat.
Nivedita, who grabbed headlines after winning a gold medal for the country at the Golden Girl Box Cup in Sweden in February last year, showed her courage in the women’s 48kg final against boxer Geetika from Haryana to turn the match result in her favor. – Hooked by 2.
The fourth edition of this youth championship, marking the successful return of domestic boxing after the Covid-19 pandemic, saw the dominance of Haryana and Services Sports Control Board (SSCB).
Haryana women managed to retain their team championship title while SSCB achieved the distinction of becoming the men’s category champion. Haryana ended its successful campaign with 12 medals including 7 gold and 5 silver in the women’s section, while SSCB topped the men’s event with 10 medals (7 gold and 3 silver).
After Geetika’s defeat in the first match of the day, Tamannaah led defending champions Haryana to their first gold in the women’s section. Tamannaah, who has been performing consistently well in the tournament, defeated Anjali Choudhary of Rajasthan 5-0 in the final of the 50kg weight category. Neha (54kg), Preeti (57kg), Preeti Dahiya (60kg), Lashu Yadav (70kg), Khushi (63kg) and Deepika (+81) were the other gold medalists from Haryana in the women’s category.
Men’s boxers from Haryana also impressed in the tournament and finished second with a total of nine medals, including 4 gold and 5 silver. 2021 World Youth Championships bronze medalist Vishwamitra Chongtham won for SSCB in the men’s event. Wonderful journey led. Consistently playing well, Chongtham defeated Himachal Pradesh’s Abhinav Katoch 5-0 in a one-sided fashion to clinch the gold medal in the 51kg weight category.
Vishwanath Suresh (48kg), Victor Singh Shaikom (54kg), Vijay Singh (57kg), Ravichandra Singh (60kg), Jaideep Rawat (71kg) and Deepak (75kg) are other gold medalists for SSCB 479 boxers from across the country participated in this youth championship. This will be followed by the third edition of Junior Boys National Championship and the fourth edition of Junior Girls National Championship, scheduled from 26 to 31 July.
The Youth and Junior National Championships served as a good opportunity for the boxers to showcase their skills. The top-performing boxers will be selected for the 2021 ASBC Youth & Junior Boxing Championships, scheduled to be held in Dubai from August 17-31.
