40 killed in floods in Afghanistan

At least 40 people were killed and several others missing in flash floods in a village in Afghanistan’s Nuristan province. The flood caused by heavy rains engulfed Mirdesh village in Kamdesh district. Preliminary information has revealed that 40 bodies have been found by the local villagers, while many are still missing.

He said that almost all the houses in the village were affected by the floods. The water also washed away cattle, destroyed agricultural land and destroyed a large part of a road in Kamdesh, bordering Pakistan, resulting in its closure.

The office of the Minister of State for Disaster Management said that search and rescue operations could not be conducted in the area as the district is under Taliban control. Meanwhile, Nuristan Governor Hafiz Abdul Qayyum said that as soon as the Taliban allows provincial officials to reach the area, rescue teams will be sent and humanitarian aid will be sent to those affected.
