Apple continues to dominate global tablet market amid supply concerns: IDC

Apple sold 12.9 million iPads in the second quarter. Apple garnered 31.9 per cent market share in this category, followed by Samsung with 19.6 per cent share, with 8 million tablets sold. The April-June period has been a strong quarter for both Chromebooks and tablets, with both device categories albeit challenging year-on-year.

According to preliminary data from IDC’s quarterly personal computing device tracker, Chromebook shipments grew 68.6 percent (year-over-year) and volumes have reached 12.3 million units.
The tablet segment has been a bit more restrained than Chromebooks, but still managed to grow 4.2 percent with total shipments of 40.5 million units.
There is still ample opportunity in the education market for both tablets and Chromebooks, said Anooga Natraj, Senior Research Analyst at IDC. Online learning is witnessing rapid growth and has fueled the digital revolution in learning.
Despite the positive results during the quarter, both the categories are facing some slowdown as compared to the previous quarters.

Some of this applies for tablets, the report shows, but there is also a bigger concern that consumer demand for tablets will slow much faster than Chromebooks or the wider PC market.
