China’s Lyu becomes oldest lifter to win Olympic gold

Chinese legend Lyu Xiaojun has become the oldest weightlifter to win an Olympic Games gold medal. At the age of 37, he achieved the men’s 81kg category title with three new Olympic records. Lew, who turned 37 on Tuesday, broke the record held by Rudolf Pluckfelder of the Soviet Union. At the age of 36, Rudolf won the gold medal in Tokyo in 1964.
Dominican Republic’s Zacharias Bonnet Michel won the silver medal with 367kg. Italy’s Antonino Pizzolato won the bronze medal with 365kg. Lyu, who started weightlifting in 1998, said his love for the sport had grown immense over the past two decades. “I used to love weightlifting at a young age, but now it’s my love,” Lyu told a news conference. That’s why I will continue this till I am 37 or even 40 years old.
