England staggered by packing India at 364

Fast bowler James Anderson (5 for 62) helped England bowl India out for 364 in the first innings after lunch on the second day of the second Test on Friday. For 119 runs in 45 overs, they have stumbled for three wickets and are 245 runs behind India’s first innings score.

Fast bowler Mohammad Siraj dismissed opener Dominic Sibley and Haseeb Hameed, who was included in the playing XI in this match. Sibley made 11 off 44 balls while Hameed was bowled off his first ball. Mohammed Shami denied opener Rory Burns to score a half-century and took him leg before round the wicket. Burns scored 49 runs in 136 balls with the help of seven fours. Captain Joe Root 48 and Jonny Bairstow were at the crease after scoring six runs at stumps.

Earlier, India started playing ahead of 276 runs for three wickets. Lokesh Rahul made 127 and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane took their innings forward by one run. Rahul took two runs in the first ball of the first over of Ollie Robinson in the morning but was caught in cover to Dominic Sibley on the next ball. Rahul hit 12 fours and a six in his 129 off 250 balls.

On the first ball of Anderson’s next over, Rahane was caught by England captain Joe Root at first slip. Rahane scored one run off 23 balls. After Rahane’s dismissal, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who took the field, shared a crucial 49-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket. Pant played some aggressive shots during this and hit two excellent boundaries on Anderson. Fast bowler Mark Wood got Pant caught by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. Pant hit five fours in 37 runs off 58 balls. Mohammed Shami, as soon as he came, tried to play a high shot off off-spinner Moeen Ali in the next over and was caught by Rory Burns. Shami’s account was not even opened.

After this, Ishant Sharma, who came on the field, added 26 runs for the eighth wicket with Jadeja. Anderson, returning again in the bowling spell, broke Ishant leg before. Ishant scored eight runs off 29 balls. Anderson gave India the ninth blow by getting Jasprit Bumrah caught by wicketkeeper Butler on the last ball of his next over. Anderson took five wickets in the innings for the 34th time in his illustrious career. Mark Wood caught Jadeja at the hands of Anderson and India’s innings was bundled out for 364 runs. Jadeja hit three fours in his innings of 40 off 120 balls.

For England, Anderson took five wickets for 62 runs in 29 overs, while Robinson took two wickets for 73 runs, Mark Wood took two wickets for 91 runs and Moeen Ali took one wicket for 53 runs.
