Landslides caused by rain in central China

In central China, torrential rains caused landslides in many places. The official China News Service (CNS) quoted government officials as saying that more than 300 people had died in floods in the same region last month. Due to heavy rain in the country on Saturday, authorities had to close some tunnels and some bridges in the big city of Zhengzhou in Henan province. At least 292 people died here in July due to floods. He said that 95 passenger trains were canceled in Zhengzhou.

An area in the western province of Shaanxi received 24 millimeters (9 1/2 inches) of rain over the weekend, according to the CNS. He said the rain caused an estimated loss of about 450 million yuan ($70 million) to farmers and others.

State TV said about 25 highways were closed in Henan, Shaanxi and Sichuan in the southwest. The CNS reported that power supply was disrupted in some towns of Shaanxi and landslides occurred in other places.
