Vigilance raids on 28 campuses of former Tamil Nadu minister KC Veeramani

Accused of possessing disproportionate assets
The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Thursday morning launched searches at 28 premises in Chennai and other places belonging to former Commercial Taxes Minister KC Veeramani in the AIADMK government. In fact, a case of disproportionate assets under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered on Wednesday by NGO Arappor Iyakkam on the Vellore contingent of DVAC on former commercial minister KC Veeramani and a probe was demanded.
The agency said that in the FIR lodged, DVAC stated that from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2021, Veeramani had acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. This property was in the name of him and his mother. Based on the election affidavits, DVAC has calculated his disproportionate assets during the election at Rs 28.78 crore. DVAC said this is 654 per cent of their total income during the period.
Veeramani, who held the Commercial Taxes and Registration portfolio from 2016 to 2021, was also a minister in the 2011-2016 AIADMK regime. He lost the 2021 election from Jolarpet in Tiruppattur district of Tamil Nadu.
On the other hand, elections to local bodies are going to be held in Tamil Nadu after the assembly elections. The High Court has asked the State Election Commission to announce the dates for civic polls in the state by September 15. At the same time, before the body elections, there have been statements of many senior leaders of AIADMK that it would be better if an alliance with BJP is not kept in these elections.
