Kerala : Another blow to Congress in Kerala, V.M. Sudheeran leaves PAC

Congress party’s prominent leader in Kerala VM Sudheeran has resigned from the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC). The PAC is the highest decision-making body of the state unit of the party and comprises all the top officials.

The 73-year-old leader appointed new state president K. Sudhakaran tendered his resignation. According to sources close to him, the new leadership of Sudhakaran and Leader of Opposition VD Sathisan is not taking him into confidence, despite Sudheeran being a former party president, MLA, Lok Sabha member, minister and former MLA.

Sudheeran left the PAC at a time when AICC general secretary in-charge of Kerala Tariq Anwar is reaching the state capital to finalize the party’s 51-member organizational structure.

In recent times, the state unit of the Congress party has suffered a setback. Last week, two top state general secretaries KP Anil Kumar and Rathi Kumar quit the party and joined the CPI(M).

Many Congressmen will remember what happened after Sudheeran took over as state party president in 2014 when he took an open stance against the policies of the then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s government, especially the liquor policy. The Congress-led UDF suffered a complete defeat in the 2016 assembly elections.
The state unit of the Congress party has not recovered since that defeat and hence, his leaving the party will not make much difference.

Congress party’s Kerala unit working president PT Thomas also a senior legislator said he was confident that things would get sorted out. Thomas said Sudhakaran had met Sudheeran and had a discussion with him. We are sure that the leadership of the party will sort out the issues and proceed smoothly.
