Harmeet Singh, who killed five family members, has been sentenced to death by the court of Additional Sessions Judge (V) Ashutosh Kumar Mishra. On Monday, the court had convicted Harmeet. In October 2014, Harmeet had stabbed her father, stepmother, nine-month pregnant sister and niece to death on the night of Diwali. The court also termed the death of the fetus as murder. Assistant District Government Advocate Rajiv Kumar Gupta told that the court has given the verdict considering this case as the rarest of the rare.

The hearing on the sentence in the case began at 12 noon on Tuesday. In the hearing that lasted for about an hour, arguments were presented on behalf of the prosecution for the death sentence awarded by the Supreme Court in similar cases that came up in Bihar in 2008, Punjab in 1980 and 1983. The court reserved the verdict after hearing the arguments of the prosecution. After this, the proceedings resumed at around 4 pm and the court sentenced Harmeet.

Nephew’s testimony was important: This heart-wrenching incident took place seven years ago in Adarsh ​​Nagar of Doon. Harmeet killed father Jai Singh, stepmother Kulwant Kaur, sister Harjit Kaur and three-year-old niece Sukhmani for the property. The incident came to light when the maid Raji reached their house at around 10.30 am the next day. Harjit Kaur’s son Kamal’s testimony was important in this case. He is the only eyewitness to this incident. Harmeet had also attacked Kamal, but he survived.

Section 302 (murder) – Hanging
Section 307 (attempt to murder) – 10 years imprisonment and fine of Rs 25,000
-Section 316 (murder of pregnant woman) – 10 years imprisonment and fine of 25 thousand rupees
– Additional imprisonment of five years for non-payment of fine
