NLC India Limited striving to increase coal production
A Navratna PSU – the 20 MTPA Talabira III & III Open Mine of NLC India Limited, Odisha has produced more than 2 million tonnes of coal during its first full year of operation so far.
NLCIL has taken steps to achieve the target of 6 MT per annum from its original schedule of 4 MT during the current year and keeping in view the high demand of coal, NLCIL has taken steps to increase the coal production of Talabira mine to 10 MT in the current year. And making every effort to increase it to 20 MT from next year.
The coal produced is being transported to one of the 2 & 500 MW end-use plants of NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited at Tuticorin, a subsidiary of NLCIL. The entire power generated is meeting the requirement of the southern states, of which Tamil Nadu has a major share (more than 40 per cent).
The recent amendment to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act on Mineral Concession Rules by the Ministry of Coal has enabled the mine to sell additional coal after meeting the coal requirement of the end-use plant. Accordingly, permission has been sought from Ministry of Coal to sell the surplus coal.
