The population of the country will decrease! Big drop in fertility rate

The population of the country is going to decrease, because the total fertility rate or the average number of children a woman gives birth to in her lifetime has come below the replacement rate and now it has become 2. Is. This has been revealed from the National Family Health Survey data 2019-21, which was released on Wednesday. The replacement rate (TFR) is defined as the rate in which one generation replaces the other. According to the survey, the replacement rate is 2.1. According to the survey, the total fertility rate in Bihar (3.0), Uttar Pradesh (2.4) and Jharkhand (2.3) is higher than the replacement rate.

India’s TFR was 2.7 during the National Family Health Survey-3 in 2005-06, which has come down to 2.2 in 2015-16. On the other hand, between the NFHS-3 and the latest NFHS-5 in 2019-21, there has been a big decline in TFR in the most populous states of the country like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, due to which the total population of the country has decreased. The fertility rate has declined and has gone below the replacement rate.

The first phase of NFHS-5 was done from 17 June 2019 to 30 January 2020 and the second phase ran from 2 January 2020 to 30 April 2021. 22 states and union territories were targeted in Phase-I and 14 States and Union Territories were included in Phase-II. In all other states, except Bihar, the urban TFR is below the replacement rate. At the same time, the total fertility rate in rural areas is higher only in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. On the other hand, rural areas of smaller states like Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram also have higher total fertility rates.

Lowest fertility rate in Jammu and Kashmir
The lowest total fertility rate among large states is 1.4 in Jammu and Kashmir. Since the last NFHS survey in 2015-16, Jammu and Kashmir is the only state that has recorded the highest decline (0.6) in the total fertility rate. Kerala and Punjab had a total fertility rate of 1.6 in NFHS-4, while it was 1.7 in Tamil Nadu. In the new survey, the total fertility rate in Punjab is only 1.6, but Kerala and Tamil Nadu have registered an increase in the total fertility rate. TFR in both has increased to 1.8 in 2019-21. Sikkim has the lowest fertility rate of 1.1.

Fertility rate equal to South Korea
Sikkim’s fertility rate is comparable to South Korea’s lowest fertility rate in the world. According to United Nations Population Data, Niger (6.9) and Somalia (6.1) have the highest fertility rates. If we talk about the neighboring states of India, then Nepal has the lowest total fertility rate after India and Bangladesh, while in Africa it is 4.4, while it is 2.4 in Oceania countries.

However, the replacement level fertility rate is 2.1 or less in all countries. Asia’s total fertility rate is 2.15, which is slightly higher than the replacement rate.
