Earlier this seat used to fall in Rajpur assembly constituency and was in general category. Ghantaghar, Karanpur, Rajpur Road, Dilaram Bazar, Saharanpur Road, Prince Chowk etc. are covered under this seat, extending from Bannu School in the north to Dilaram Bazar in the south. The number of this seat is 20. This time BJP has fielded Khajandas and Congress has made Rajkumar as its candidate.

There are more than 17 slums in this assembly constituency along with several VIP areas. Importantly, about 55 per cent of the total voters reside in these slums. The participation of this class in the form of voters in elections is seen the most. In this sense, it is the voters of these slums that play a decisive role in the victory and defeat of the candidates.

Political history

So far this seat has seen a fight between BJP and Congress. Before the delimitation, in the 2002 assembly elections (then Rajpur seat), Congress candidate Hira Singh Bisht had won from here. In the next election (year 2007), BJP’s candidate Ganesh Joshi became MLA from this seat. After the delimitation, Rajkumar of Congress in 2012 and Khajandas of BJP became MLA in 2017.

Social equation

About 59 percent voters in this seat belong to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes. These voters prove to be decisive in the election. The remaining 41 percent voters belong to Brahmins, Rajputs and other castes. As a voter in this seat, the business class also plays an important role in the election. This time around 1,18,947 voters will decide who to make the rule in the upcoming assembly elections.
