Today the storm will weaken after reaching the Bay of Bengal, the effect of heavy rain and strong winds will remain
Cyclone Asani, which has been going on for the last 5 days, is now weakening. After hitting the Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday, it is slowly moving towards the Bay of Bengal on Thursday. According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone will reach the Bay of Bengal by this evening. After that it can calm down.
However, while reaching the Bay of Bengal, wind speed reaching 80 kmph with light and heavy rain is likely over Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal coast. The effect of the storm will also be on other states bordering these states. Light rain may occur in some areas of Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh adjoining Bengal and Odisha. It rained in these areas on Wednesday as well.
According to the Meteorological Department, on Wednesday, Cyclone Asani was located about 20 km north-east of Machilipatnam, 50 km south-west of Narsapur and 120 km west-southwest of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. The state is still on alert mode regarding rain.
Rain alert in many states
According to the Meteorological Department, during the next 24 hours, very heavy rain is possible over Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Light to moderate rain with isolated heavy falls very likely over West Bengal, Coastal Odisha, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and South Karnataka. At the same time, heavy rain has also been predicted in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Andhra CM holds review meeting
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy took stock of the situation through a video conferencing with the collectors of the coastal districts. They have been asked to be on high alert during any emergency. Apart from this, the CM said that our focus should be on preventing loss of life and property. Andhra government has opened 454 relief camps in 7 districts that may be affected by the storm.
Thousands of boats stranded due to storm alert off the coast of southern states
In Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram, a storm has put the lives of fishermen in trouble. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till further orders following the weather forecast. Fishermen wait for the weather to improve by putting their boats on the shore at Vijnijam Port in Thiruvananthapuram.
50 teams of NDRF deployed, Navy also alert
Due to the crisis, a total of 50 teams of NDRF have been kept for West Bengal, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Out of this, 22 teams have been deployed on the ground, while 28 teams have been kept on alert within the states to deal with the situation. Apart from this, INS Dega in Visakhapatnam and INS Razali near Chennai have been kept on alert mode at the Navy Station for aerial survey and relief operations of the affected areas if required.
