41 candidates elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha, the remaining seats will be voted on June 10
41 candidates who filed nominations for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha, to be held on June 10, were elected unopposed. These elected candidates have reached the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Tamil Nadu. The winning candidates include BJP, Congress, AAP, RLD, SP, JMM, DMK, AIADMK and YSR Congress parties besides an independent candidate. June 3 was the last day of withdrawal.
Uttar Pradesh: 11 including eight BJP members won unopposed
11 members, including eight BJP members, have been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. The eight elected BJP members include Laxmikant Vajpayee, Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agarwal, Surendra Nagar, Dr. K. Laxman, Mithilesh Kumar, Baburam Nishad, Sangeeta Yadav and Darshan Singh are there. Kapil Sibal has been selected as an independent candidate. At the same time, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Jayant Chaudhary has also been declared elected. Both have been elected with the support of the Samajwadi Party. Javed Ali of Samajwadi Party has also been elected. Returning Officer Brij Bhushan Dubey gave their certificates to the elected members.
Jharkhand: Maji of JMM, Sahu of BJP took certificate
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)’s Mahua Maji and BJP’s Aditya Sahu were on Friday declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand. This will be Maji and Sahu’s first innings in the Upper House of Parliament. Jharkhand Assembly Secretary and Returning Officer for Elections Syed Javed Haider announced the results. Maji was earlier the chairperson of Jharkhand State Commission for Women. She has also been the president of the women’s wing of JMM. The JMM leader had earlier contested from Ranchi assembly seat, but lost. The JMM has 30 MLAs in the 81-member state assembly, while the Congress has 17 MLAs and the main opposition BJP has 26 MLAs.
Punjab: AAP’s Seechewal and Sahni elected
In the Rajya Sabha elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates from Punjab, environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal and entrepreneur and social activist Vikramjit Singh Sahni have been elected unopposed. Surinder Pal, Returning Officer cum Secretary, Punjab Vidhan Sabha said that both Seechewal and Sahni have been declared the winners unopposed. AAP had nominated Seechewal and Sahni for two Rajya Sabha seats. The tenure of Rajya Sabha members from Punjab Ambika Soni (Congress) and Balwinder Singh Bhundar (SAD) will end on July 4.
Madhya Pradesh: Tankha, Sumitra and Kavita reach Rajya Sabha
Senior advocate and Congress leader Vivek Tankha, BJP women leaders Kavita Patidar and Sumitra Valmiki were on Friday declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh.
Tankha has been elected to the Upper House for the second time in a row. Both Valmiki and Patidar are going to Rajya Sabha for the first time. AP Singh, Principal Secretary of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly and Returning Officer for Rajya Sabha elections, announced the results. He informed that no other candidate had filed nomination for the three vacant seats in the state, while today was the last date for withdrawal of candidature. It is known that Patidar has previously worked as a member of Madhya Pradesh Women’s Commission. At the same time, Valmiki has been a councilor in the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation thrice and an alderman once. At the same time, Tankha is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha and his current term will end next month. At present, out of 11 Rajya Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has eight seats while the Congress has three.
Chhattisgarh: Congress’s Shukla and Ranjan elected unopposed
Rajeev Shukla and Ranjeet Ranjan, the candidates of the ruling Congress Party in Chhattisgarh, were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on Friday. This information was given by the Secretary of the Legislative Assembly, Dinesh Sharma. Sharma said that Congress candidate Ranjit Ranjan himself appeared while his brother obtained his election certificate on behalf of Rajiv Shukla. The terms of Chhaya Verma (Congress) and Ramvichar Netam (BJP), two of the five Rajya Sabha members from Chhattisgarh, are ending this month. The three other Rajya Sabha members from the state are KTS Tulsi and Phulo Devi Netam from the Congress while Saroj Pandey from the BJP.
It is known that 63-year-old Shukla, who hails from UP and came to politics from journalism, has been a Rajya Sabha member three times before this. Ranjit Ranjan is a former Lok Sabha MP from Bihar. After Ranjan’s election unopposed, there are now three women Rajya Sabha members from the state. In the 90-member Chhattisgarh assembly, the Congress has 71 MLAs, the BJP 14, the Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) three and the BSP two. The BJP, the main opposition party of the state, did not field its candidate in view of its low strength in the state assembly.
Bihar: All five candidates elected unopposed
The candidates of JDU, BJP and RJD were elected unopposed on Friday for the five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar. JD(U) candidate Khiru Mahto, BJP candidates Satish Chandra Dubey and Shambhu Sharan Patel while RJD candidates Misa Bharti and Dr. Fayaz Ahmed were given the certificates of victory at around 4 pm. Assembly Secretary Shailendra Singh gave this information.
Tamil Nadu: Chidambaram, five others reach Rajya Sabha
All the six candidates who filed their nominations from Tamil Nadu were declared elected unopposed by the authorities on Friday. Among them are three candidates of the ruling DMK. Those elected unopposed include ruling DMK’s S Kalyanasundaram, R Girirajan and KRN Rajesh Kumar, AIADMK’s CV Shanmugam and R Dharmar and Congress party’s candidate P. Chidambaram. With Chidambaram’s selection, the Congress party will have a member from Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha after a long gap. Chidambaram was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra in 2016 and his term ends on July 4 this year.
Uttarakhand: Seal on the election of Dr. Kalpana Saini
BJP leader Dr. Kalpana Saini has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. On Friday, returning officer and secretary of the assembly, Mukesh Singhal, handed over the election certificate to him in the assembly building. Now along with the Lok Sabha, all the three seats of Rajya Sabha have also come in the bag of BJP. Talking to the media, Dr. Saini said that she would try to stand the test of party leadership. Describing herself as the daughter of Uttarakhand, she said that she would raise the problems of the state in the Rajya Sabha.
Andhra Pradesh: Four candidates of YSRC won
Four YSR Congress (YSRC) candidates were declared elected unopposed on Friday in the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh. State Chief Electoral Officer Mukesh Kumar Meena made this announcement. Elected candidates include V. Vijayasai Reddy, B. Mastan Rao, R. Krishnaiah and S. Niranjan Reddy. Now the number of YSR Congress members in the Rajya Sabha has increased to nine. There are 11 Rajya Sabha seats from Andhra Pradesh. One of them is with the BJP and one seat is with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
